Should I swap 98 PCM/harness to 99-02?
Convince me whether or not its worth the money. A little background here. Last year before I knew the differences between the 98's and the later models, I purchased a '98 F-body LS1/4L60E complete drop-out for my S-15 swap. I could have gotten a '99 for $500 more. I have the motor/trans mounted and will be integrating the LS1 harness with the truck soon. It would be now or never to go with the 99-02 setup. I will be purchasing HP Tuners soon as well, and one license is spoken for to go on my '03 Sierra. I need to decide if the other license will be for a '98 F-body or a later year. My plans for the S-15 are after it runs and the bugs are worked out of the swap to do AFR heads, FMS cam, FAST 90, LT headers, 4000ish stall, etc, for a strip/street ride. There are no plans for nitrous or forced induction. A later PCM is relatively easy to get, the complete engine harness will be tougher to find. I already have the Helm manuals for the '98, and the pinouts mapped for the '98 harness For what I'm planning, would it be even worth the cost/hassle to change? This also assumes that I can unplug my harness and plug a later one into my motor. I'm fairly sure that will work, the gauge temp sender difference is not an issue. Are there any other (important) plugs that aren't compatible? I'd appreciate any insight y'all can give on if this would be a worthwhile endeavor.

Like George implied, '01+ is better than '99-00. This is because it only has one VE table (which means that you don't have to deal with the low-resolution secondary VE table in SD). If I were to choose which one to get, I'd get an '01+.

Im in the same boat. I have a 99 PCM and harness. I was thinking of either getting it flashed as an 01/02 or getting a new PCM altogther. Would there be problems plugging into this harness with a newer PCM?
I know it would physically plug in to the harness, I'm just wondering about things being plug in and reading correctly on the ther end(s).
Using a 01/02 PCM would get rid of the need for an EGR or AIR ijection into the headrs, right? I'm about to order my Kooks and would like to order w/o AIR if possible.
I'm going to SMOG in Cali so I need to have the right flash in there, right? or would putting an 01/02 VIN in the flash work. This is for a 94 V6 conversion. And if this would work for smog, how would an 01/02 VIN affect HPTuners in a 99 PCM?
Sorry to jump on your thread, but its semi related and gives ya a ttt....

Too late for that unless you want to buy a Lunati 395 Stroker I already have the short block built, placing my order for AFR heads today. I have the 99 harness and PCM, but really would like to avoid the EGR if possible. My ordering Kooks is also on hold until I know for sure. I'm looking at getting 1 7/8" Kooks. I've been told EGR is worthless for that size, I really dont know if it is or not :S I have read in the archives that some people have put their EGR back on, so now Im really confused.

If you are going to smog that beast in Ca, long tubes will not pass the visual. If you have a connection with a smog tech, then you shouldn't worry about anything related to smog.
Now, as for the 2001 ECM into a 1999 harness, it should bolt up, but if you have HPTuners for a 1999 model, you will not be able to tune it, since it is year/model locked and you (apperantely) do not have 2001 model support. You will either have to purchase the 2001 model support, or copy the 2001 tables to your 1999 ECM. If you are worried about the 2001 not having EGR and AIR, all you have to do is turn them off in your 1999 ECM ... that is how GM does it.

So, long story short. I wonder if I can remove the EGR equipment, turn it off via Tuning and put in a 2001/2 VIN into the PCM. Maybe this is a question for the HP Tuners forum.
THanks, guys.
