The transverse mounted 3.8 (FWD) engines were known for leaking fuel pressure regulators. If you have a rail mounted regulator (your RWD may be returnless), probably would be a good idea to pull the vacuum line off and check for any fuel.

The 3.8 was also good about burning out plug wires. If its got an old set of plug wires, could probably use some new ones.

Any trouble codes set?

P0300 is Random misfires or Multiple misfires. With a scantool that does more than just read codes, you should be able to watch which cylinder is misfiring.

Some of the things that I have found causing misfires on these engines are:

1) burnt out plug wire
2) damaged/faulty spark plug
3) restricted fuel injector
4) damaged injector wiring (mostly from mice)

Could also have a mechanical issue, like bent pushrod or weak/broken valvespring. I would also check fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure would cause multiple cylinders to misfire.

If the PCM detects a misfire on cylinder #1, then its should set a P0301. If it did narrow it down to cylinder #1, then thats what I would focus on. If you pull the wire off of the spark plug, look inside the plug boot. You should be able to see a shiny silver terminal crimped around the plug wire. If its black and sooty inside, its definitely bad.
