Default question about tuning shift points, never done it before...

got a guy that wants the shift points adjusted on his car, its got 3.23 gears and stock converter. i have never messed with any shift points or anything like that. he just wants it to shift faster and harder. what do you guys recommend for settings?

Yes. Editor>trans>shift prop> then under shift vs rpm vs gear, use that, set the points for shifting. You can adjust the mph as well, probably need an actual calculator for that, but I guessed mine will post up each step when I get home. Also, make sure the rev limiter (fuel cutoff) is a few hundred higher than the shift points. That will do when the trans shifts.
Now for the firmness, you adjust line pressure, and there is a lot of debate on that so I havent messed with mine at all, besides I have shift kit with 3 washers in. But generally, slightly raise the pressure for corresponding gear in the area you want.
Now for the time to complete each shift, the lower the time, the quicker the shift, but do not go below .006 (I think thats the right time). Again, I will copy and email you my tables once I get home. The time for shift has been discussed on too low equals wearing of the internals, I tried lowest setting once and it was horribly fast and painful shifts.

I adjusted the Force Motor Current vs. Pressure vs. Temp. Lowering the values will shift harder. I used it with 3.42 and 3.73's and shifts nicely. You can also decrease the Desired Shift Time. Lowering it will shift faster and do not go below 0.100 sec.

If the car still has the stock cam/valvetrain then, the WOT Shift RPM vs. Shift will be left at 6200 rpm. The car uses both rpm and speed thresholds in order to shift. That is, the conditions have to be true in order for the pcm to shift to the next gear. What I do is leave the the mph threshold low and rely mostly on the rpm. For example, a 3.32 geared car may shift at 46mph at 6000rpm during 1-2 shift. I would set the mph lower, ~42mph. This will be more of an issue with higher stall cars or going with a numerically higher gear. As far as shift speeds, probably no need to change those with a stock TC or stock gears.

Generally when I adjust WOT shift properties I set it off RPM instead of MPH... since (as mentioned) both conditions must be met... if the MPH is low but the RPM is say 6000 (set 150-200 RPM below what you want it to shift at ... at least for a big converter, never touched stock... scan the commanded Gear and RPM to see how many RPM it increases during the shift)

So I effectively only use the RPM to shift

ok thanks man, so the main thing is shift points then, not so much with the speed of the shift and all? he said he watned to increase that stuff, so whatever he wants, i just wanted to do it safely. he wants faster shifts that hit harder

See, some ppl word things so much better, especially when I am tired. Sorry I didnt get back to you, got home and forgot about all of it. I left my mph low as well, since I know the RPM is my goal. And the props to blacker for the .100 on the shift time, I knew there was some figure you didnt want to go lower than, although I used .006 maybe thats why it was so damn hellacious!
