Default timing question.... 2002 Vs 99

ok, why is my main spark table on my 2002 LS1 so much less then my friends 99 tables?

i went online and downloaded some bins... same thing 02s have ALOT less timing then 99s.

can anyone explain why? i never compared the two side by side till last week, but i cant figure out WHY its like that...

try it, if it doesn't knock, or knocks in just few cells, it's something to try

You'll definitely be knocking like a son of a bitch with that table. I had 2-3* KR consistently in the .56-.64g/cyl. - mid-rpm range with the stock '02 table on my Z. I backed it out a little, but I didn't want to do too much. You can go up on the top end 3-4* though.

oh, i already did.

something about 7ish degrees of knock retard made me stop.

seriously though, the engine HATED that much timing.

im curious as to why.

some of my friends with 99s (about 5 of them) have !egr !AIR, ORY and diffrent cams.. yet no knock retard... my car with the same cam, !egr !air and ORY cant take it... only diff is mine is a 02, theirs are 99s.

is there a table adding more spark in?
combustion chamber shape diff?
thicker MLS gasket make it more detontation prone?
anyone with ideas?

the cam is a bit different from '99 to '02. I believe JRP has the cam specs for all years listed in his stickies

heh, i got a 99 with a z06 cam in it, and it hated the stock 99 timing tables, so i tried the z06 tables and it's much better. i did up it about 3degs on avg, as i don't have the nice z06 heads, so the optimal setup for me ended up about 12.6AFR and 25degs of timing. i did manage to squeeze some more power out of it by leaning it out, but i'm not risking blowing **** up for 5hp extra.

My 01 loved the extra timing, stock internals+full bolt ons. I used the 98/99 table and gave it as much as possible. Ended up with 29 on the top end and between 2-3 degrees more from 3000-5000rpm.

Now my friends 01 with lid and a cat back did not like the 98/99 table. End result was 2-3 degrees less timing across the board than the stock 98/99 table.

I have no problems running the 99 table on my 02 SS. The 99 table took the laziness out of my car. I even added timing in the 2400-3200 on top of the 99 table with no trouble. I do however have max timing at 27* instead of the 28* above 5400 rpm's from .72 g/cyl to 1.2 g/cyl. It pinged just a little at 28* so I backed it down.
