Default Why does my spark advance need to be set so high to idle?

Engine --> Spark Advance -->Base Spark vs Airflow --> In Park

We set 0 to 1200 RPMS up to 35. The guy helping me hadn't tuned a cam this big yet and had never seen numbers this high to get it to idle like this. He got this number from using the VCM control and manually playing with it till it smoothed up and idled. We didn't get a chance to change the In Drive table so it stalls out still when put in gear, but the laptop I had died yesterday so we couldn't get any further.

Can you think of anything mechanical that could cause the need for this? Something else in the tune way out of whack?

Thanks.

have you tried adjusting the IAC tables. That sounds really high to me also. I did the same thing you did, but that was just playing around.Even though my car liked it, I decided to play with the IAC first, and start from 23* and go from there. I'm going to put my new idle tune it today and see how it works.

Here's something to get you started:

Not yet actually. My HPTuners has an issue with the crappy laptop I'm using since everytime I try to use the Table Display in the scanner it just crashes the scanner altogether.

I've been through those documents front to back already. Still had issues with the idle until we bumped the Spark numbers up.

For a cam that small you will need about 20-24* of timing at idle. My G5x4 only sees about 20-22 in those areas

I'd say keep it around 22 and work the IAC to smooth it out. but that's just me.

I'm set at 31 in the 800 rpms column and 33 in the 1200 rpm column...You need additional timing with a good size cam because the dynamic cylinder pressure down low is less than when the stock cam was in there...

I have very good idle and no bucking...Match up the base table timing with the main spark table for 1200 rpms and under, that way the rpms will not jump around when the pcm looks between the two tables...

Peace...Gman

Gman,

When you matched it up, did you do both base park and in drive?

Yes, I made both the drive and park tables identical...I didn't know if it would matter, being that I am a manual, but I did it anyway...
