Default O2 sensor SES light

My SES light comes and goes. Usually it either turns on or off when I unch it and run it for a couple seconds. I've noticed I get noticably worse gas milage when it is on. I went to a buddy of mine and he put it on the machine which said that it was an O2 sensor. What could be causing the O2 sensor to give me an SES light, and could cause all these problems???

Pewter is right, its usually just a tired sensor. How many miles do you have on the car?? Sometimes the o2's just dont heat properly and will turn on and off and not switch fast enough. Go get it scanned again and write down the codes, then post them up. Either I can tell you what they mean, or someone else can. Also just do a search on the subject of either "bad o2's" or something of that nature.
