Default Tuning LS1 for dumbies

I put a post on here about tuning after installing a stroker kit. Most everybody said the same thing, take it somewhere and have it done. Not me, everything that's gone wrong with the car I've fixed myself. This includes three steering column locks, a clutch slave cyclinder(what an undertaking), and other minor things like reprogramming wheel sensors. If I can do all that I think I can learn about engine programming. My question is: where do I start, and what do I need to buy. What is HP Tuner and LS1 edit? Would these work?

hp tuners is what you need. ls1edit is like using dos based software, where hp tuners is windows friendly. If you ever have questions concerning hp tuning they have their own website and forum to ask questions, and ls1edit doesn't.

The thing is that most people can slowly get the hang of tuning their car as the mods slowly progress. Getting a big cube stroker to run safely will be a bit of a challenge for a first timer. I would consider enlisting the help of someone local who knows very well what theyre doing so that youre not overwhelmed by yourself. Its a little more involved than simply changing a displacement field from 346 to 402 or what have you.

I wish someone would create a "step-by-step" guide on how to tune an LS1 for near-ideal AFR with and without MAF, and such...

I know Horist plans to do it one day, but he's busy...

Go visit the websites at HP Tuners and EFILive, try the demos, search the forum stickies, there's a lot of info out there.

You did all that yourself, then you'll have no trouble learning to tune your setup.

I learned lt1 edit from reading a long faq written by LJ. PCM tuning is fairly simple once broken down into its comprehensive steps. Lj's site
Read through his pcm tutorial
Then get accustomed the buttons of hp tuners, as it is much more user friendly. Read the tutorials and faq's on this forum and have fun!!

I think one of the best things you could do would be to find someone in your area who is experienced with the software you want to use (personally, my choice is EFILive FlashScan) and experienced with tuning with a wideband, and get some help. Completely tuning a stroker motor isn't something you can pick up overnight...and you definitly don't want to learn how to tune by making mistakes - you can trash a new engine in a hurry if you don't know what your doing. If you were working with a bolt-on car, I would say you could learn slowly by working on small changes...but you don't have that option. Just my opinion.

I've just purchased HpTuners software myself and the .bin list was was huge help to me that was stickied at the top. I'm new myself to tuning, and the list gave me some direction on examples on what to change and how. Thanks to horist for the list compilation.

You should contact "Wait4me" on here - he is an EFILive dealer and very knowledgable - I got my software from him and he has helped me tremendously! He is located in Indiana.
