Default if evap has a small leak, what are side effects?

i dont want to pay 80 bucks right now for a smoke test. the line and purge in the engine bay are brand new. the light comes and goes. i am thinking about setting the code to not report error so i dont have to look at the damn light. will it effect anything not being fixed?

p0442 small evap leak code

This may be related to the fuel tank plumbing, a gas cap
that doesn't seal, or a fuel tank pressure sensor that's
being a whiner?

The idea of losing the entire contraption and putting a
breather filter on the flapping end of the tank hose, has
a certain rustic charm.

gas cap is brand new too so all the easy things are out of the way. lol

if it were you, would you just disable the code until you can find a fix?

Yeah, according to the Helm book this is just a system
diagnostic. Though a big leak, might let enough air move
during (purge?) to alter low speed mixture. I'd kill the
code as prelude to bigger things.

It holds the gas fumes inside the canister when you turn off the car, and releases them into the intake once you get going down the road again. All it does really is keep the EPA happy, like said above, unless it is releasing these fumes at a low RPM it will have no effect on the vehicles performance.

I remember back in 95-96 when OBDII first came out and we saw these codes repeatedly. The gas cap was one culprit. Overfilling the tank and/or filling with the engine running would also cause this code... you're not doing either of those are you?

And to answer your question, yes. The only way the evap system can purge (into the engine) is through the purge valve. Otherwise it would just leak into the atmosphere.

Could be the vent solenoid has a small leak. I replace alot of those on different vehicles. Could be a hose clamp that didn't get tightened correctly. I'd take a look at the vent solenoid though, they have a tendency to leak some at times and not at others.
