Well there are times when it's necessary to clean it such as if you run a K&N or a filter that gets oil on your MAF. There could be other reasons. But I had a bunch of black crap on the q-tip I was using to clean the sensor after I was experiencing a weird problem on startup (car kept trying to idle at 2500RPM). Cleaning the MAF fixed the problem.

I would only use electrical component cleaner. Brake cleaner is not the same, it is a little more harsh of a chemical and can leave some residue.

brakekleen does not leave a residue....it evaporates on contact.Do you really think it would be used on brakes if it left any residue?yes it is a bit more harsh then electrical contact cleaner but it works just the same.

yeah..i used brake cleaner on mine (assuming that the evaporation would leave everything clean) and it worked fine. i cleaned it after getting codes saying banks 1 & 2 were running lean. it fixed the problem for ~ 300 miles, then the code reset so i began questioning myself. however, i found the problem this weekend (vacuum leakS), but the maf still functions perfectly.
