Default New 402 install in '98 car. Open loop or SD work better?

I'm getting ready to install a new LS2 402 in my '98 Trans Am. It's going to be a fairly agressive setup. ET 245 heads, 242/250 cam, Fast 90/90 setup, Kooks 1 7/8" headers, etc... Now last year with my stock block, I did my own VE and MAF tuning, but I wasn't really crazy about all the full blast sprints around the neighborhood back roads to get the higher rpm/MAP cells. This year I'm planning on taking it to a sponsor to have it professionally tuned. I pretty much outflowed my MAF at 6700 rpms last year so I know it'll be about worthless this year, so I'm going to ditch it. If I go with a VE tune, I'll probably ditch the o2 sensors too and just keep my wideband.

But given all this babbeling, which tuning method do you think will work better for me? I know a VE tune takes more time and will cost more. Is it worth it in the end?

I'm currently in the same boat. I just installed a very similar setup. Trying to resolve tuning now. Waiting for HPTuner's new release.

If the MAF is in the trash, you have two imediate options, OLSD or CLSD. I think your best bet would be to run CLSD but use the NB output from a WB for the PCM.

I need an acronym dictionary.

Ok, I thought I knew a fair amount about basic tuning after screwing with Hypertech/LS1Edit/EFILive/HPTuners for the last 3 years, but I never knew that there are both open and closed loop VE tuning. I thought open loop was one type, and Closed loop VE was another. What are the main differences? If the damn search would ever get fixed I'd be able to find this stuff out myself

check the link in my sig. It's a step-by-step for open loop SD tuning. CLSD tuning would use the fuel trims.

To elaborate on my previous post, I would tune OLSD, then switch to CLSD (as described above) for daily duties.

wouldn't you have to have the MAF in place for the ECM to use fuel trimming?

Nope, closed loop SD still learns LTFTs and applies them...

^^^^^^^^^^^^ What he said.

Speed density is speed density. Whether or not you want to run Open or Closed loop is up to you.

meh, if you're gonna have a wideband in it all the time just run open loop SD. I am right now and it's working out great.
