Default Noob IAT question, LS1 specific.

I got an AFT Iinterceptor a couple weeks ago, have been watching IAT as it relates, broadly, to radiator coolant temp around town and ambient air temp on the highway.

My question is can I possibly hurt my engine with any amount of insulating wrap or rerouting of wire harness to get my PCM a more acurate picture of the actual temp of the air in the tube?

Am I wasting $50 bucks on a meat thermometer if I explore this?

Thanks,
Scott

mods: feel free to relocate, it seems a better fit here than 'engine specific'

The wiring is incidental. The IAT sensor location and how
well situated in the true airstream, affects readings; the
setup of the inlet air duct, where it draws from (after
radiator = bad, above radiator = variable w/ driving) is
what's going to push the IAT readings around. Get as
cool a source as you can, that's all. The air, not the
electricals, is the key.
