Default Tuning Questions PCM vs. Dyno

Maybe this is a dumb question, but Ive never had my car dyno tuned. Is this the same as tuning your car using a program like HP Tuners/EFILive, or is it more involved than that? Im assuming they do things like timming and air/fuel when you get dyno tuned, but do these programs also do that?

Thanks for the help in advance!

When a car is dyno tuned, that just means that the car is on a dyno when the tuning software (HPT/EFI/Edit/etc...) is used

A dyno tune can be faster since you don't have to go out on the street and worry about cops and such... you can max all the gears while staying in 1 place.

To make things more confusing for ya () there are several types of dyno tunes... Some shops only tune WOT... they don't touch part throttle driveability

Other shops will focus on both part throttle and WOT ... but to do so they need either a mustang dyno or a dynopack w/the dynojet. This part and WOT tuning generally takes more time but is the way to go.

Then you can also just do the tune on the street or track under real world situations (real world air resitance, loads, etc...)

But all of these boil down to a method of tuning using tuning software

That clears up a lot, Thanks! So does the software give you a horsepower rating like a dyno?

No, but you can always do extrapolations based on data (like your vehicle weight, what it traps in the quarter, etc).

I suppose you can configure a custom histogram to show the PCM calculated torque/hp ... but those numbers would only be for your own tuning... they're not going to be accurate as they're calculated, not measured

The dyno is basically just a tuning tool... that outputs actual measured (as compared to calculated) torque values... ( a dyno only measures torque, Horsepower is a measure of torque over time)
