OT: Why are all the EFI companies based out of Aussieland?
I'm going to be putting together a twin-turbo SBC in a little bit and I'm trying to decide which standalone ECU I want to get. I was just noticing though, it seems like all the EFI companies are based out of Australia/NZ. There's EFILive, HPTuners, Motec, Haltech, Autronics, et al.
Is there a reason for this or is it just a weird anomoly? It doesn't matter to me either way, I'm just curious at this point, seeing as how America, Europe, and Japan are such huge car markets yet produce almost no standalones save for maybe F.A.S.T. and Electromotive (AEM doesn't count).

I think the Aussies were ahead of us as far as dissembling and using their findings. By us I mean the USA in general - I wasn't even aware of "code" when I first started looking at this stuff. PCMs brought me into the digital age.

there are an amazing number of aussie "cool stuff" that either end up in the US, acquired by US companies or funded by US VC companies, or the inventors actually moved to the US to succeed. The US is just a far more friendly place to start up a tech company, also the 15x population and market size helps too Aussie VC companies basically don't exist and of those that do wouldn't know a good idea if it bit them in the a$$...

I read somewhere a while back, that it was in part due to the high cost of importing such stuff over the years. Partly due to shipping, and Im sure also due to exchange rates etc with various currencies. It lead to them developing their own products, and it appears its something they are very good at.
Most of the Aussie ecu's are among the best in the world, which I guess is to be expected when you have so many companies developing and competing against each other.

There also is a Sydney based developer with his Real time LS1 (RTLS1) tuning software program and special PCM (same concept as the RoadRunner LS1 Realtime Emulator ) that's been around for a couple of years. The RTLS1 data log frame rate of 100fps, has its own IP address and is only available in a workshop version. Any further info google is your friend.
Les
(not advertising RTLS1 as I have nil assocation with them, just letting you know of the talent in Australia

In my opinion, it has more to do with taxes, the price of fuel and major racing. The USA lags in EFI technology because our cost per gallon of fuel has always been low compared to other countrys and our major racing organizations such as NASCAR dictates carberators. Thus we lacked the incentive, interest in developing such technology and like many things now days, have fallen behind.
