Either the IP cluster is bad or there is a communication problem.

Do you still have all the other functions of the IP?

Mine also went out some time ago in my 98 firebird but i can still read it with a bright light. Seems like there is a backlight for the lcd that has gone out but i have bot been able to get back far enough in the dash to check.

There is a backlight for the LCD and the light may well be the culprit. It's not very hard to get the cluster out. You might pull the cluster and use a couple leads w/ alligator clips hooked up to a 12V power source and pull the light that sits behind the odometer (turn counterclockwise and the light and its plastic holder pop right out) and hook the leads up to the plastic light holder. Or any other method of testing the light. I'd say this is probably a more likely scenario than a bad cluster or communication problem.
