Default 1998 LS1 Curse??!!

Why are 98 parts so taboo??!! Handheld tuners, volant intake, and a few other boltons that i've seen all start their support at 1999. Is there that much of a difference?? I know some people just purchase the part anyway and it works...BUT thats taking a considerable risk!! If it doesn't work the company can give you a hard time and say " It says on our site that this part is for 99-02."

So, My question here is can the hand held tuners like the DiabloSport Predator and the Crane Power tuner be used on a 98 WS6??

Any experiences out there with this??

The 98 PCM is different than that of the 99-02s

Will the 99 handheld tuners still work?? Has anyone tried?

Or do you lose some functionality??

no... 99+ programmers will NOT work on a 98 PCM... as mentioned they are different....

You can scan the car the same as any other, but when it comes to modifying the PCM, 98s are "special"

I know superchips makes a handheld, but has to be special ordered usually. I'm sure diablo makes a handheld for the 98s but asks someone who supplies like WS6store, if the manufacture makes it (not sure if they do) the ws6store can get it. Call Ws6 store and ask for Mike. He will be happy to help you get that programmer. I think they make it, but they never list it. The only one they list for 98s is hypertech, which is junk for tuning your engine. The computer is really the only thing that sucks on our 98s. It's basically an LT1 computer for LS1. Hope this helps.

I don't think Diablo ever came out with one for the '98 's.
The hand-held tuners are pretty limited anyway. Good news is there IS full blown tuning software / interface from HPtuners, EFILive and others.

I would go with one of those over the hand-held. You will get/need one eventually so, just save your cash and get one of those. They're not that much more expensive than the hand-held anyways.

Well if you want to go with a handheld tuner go with crane/vinci. I know this is available b/c HP TV used it on their 98' LS1.

You mean the half hour infomercial with the two old fat guys that shamelessly hawk overpriced underpowered crap made by hughmongus corporate pigs that are filming their next craptastic episode "High Performance Enviromentaly Friendly Eco-Electric Hybrids" that are powered by their own BS.

If you just want to go fast and get hot chicks then find a reptuable tuner in your area and don't bother with the can'd tune stuff.
If you would like to embark on a long expensive, well not cheap, journey that can be very rewarding press on with visiting the major makers of tuning solutions and lurk, participate in their forums and chose the solution that is best for you.
You will need a Laptop 500Mhz or better, screw it, get a nice one for ~1k
Tuning solution 600-900
Wideband O2 sensor/ controller 150-500+
An open mind to learn
And that is just to start.

I have a local tuner now (He uses HP Tuners). However, I'm in the Air Force and getting ready to be assigned overseas. So, getting it tuned locally anymore will be out of the question. Has anyone actually tuned their 98 ls1 with a Crane/vinci. If you have tuned your 98 ls1 with a handheld please respond and let us know how it worked for you. Thanks.

I totally agree, I myself use HP tuners, but some people don't want to go that sophisticated.

I don't think it's the sophisticated aspect. But HP Tuners has a STEEP learning curve. I'm an IT guy by trade so its kinda like giving someone adobe photoshop when they are used to using microsoft paint. .. But if I can't find a compatible handheld than I'll go ahead and dive into the HP Tuners world and just learn....

You should consider getting hptuner or efilive.

There's way more advanced features and your going to spend $450+ versus $600+, you really should reconsider.
