Default How did everyone learn to tune

I just got hptuners. I've been playing with it a litte, and sifting through the stickies here (which, by the way, are fantastic!! Kudos to everyone who put them together) and reading everything I can. All I have to say is DAMN!!! There is so much stuff to learn/modify!!! I'm just curious how everyone figured everything out. Did you jump in and start adjusting, or did you do tons of research first?

I don't know about other folks... but I was abducted. In the following months it slowly became clear... well, after the probe was removed that is.

Read a lot, and try small changes. You'll see what works!

Search, Read, Search, Read, Eat, Search, Read, Search, Read, Eat. It is a repeat process.

Once I thought I was comfortable enough to change things, I read more and ate.

Lots of reading, trial and error on my own car, more reading, more guessing, asking a bunch of questions, repeat.

I've been tuning for over 3 years and I still learn new stuff every month, it's almost never ending...

Search and read is about right on. Start with the basics like rev limiters and fans and things that I would consider "constants". Then go for a drive and take a nice long log of idle and part throttle and see what the car is doing. Take it from there, and search when you have questions.

I've been wanting to start learning this stuff as well. Looks like you have to be pretty patient and hope you don't screw up. lol

Read here and asked some questions, then pretty much figured it out by using the software and asking more questions here whn I ran into problems.

The biggest part to me is that you need to understand all of the working of the cars PCM and sensors. Once you understand how everything works together you will be better off to tune.

It took me about 2 weeks to get a full understanding of tuning concepts and how the cars computer works. Then the actual tuning took me about 2 weekends.

Al least if you screw up you can always revert back to the old stock tune.

I still haven't "learned" how to tune but rather am "learning". There is a point where after lots of reading of strings of letters that seem to be put together radomly, it starts to come into focus and make some sense. At first, all of the acronyms are extremely frutrating and overwhelming. Try and find or make a list and it will make it much easier to understand.

.
I have a pretty good understanding of how all the sensors work with the pcm. I just need to better understand the technical aspect more (voltages, wavelengts, etc). That, and figure out what all the numbers (like the ones in VE tables) represent and do once you change them.

trial and error. Three most important aspects of tuning, patience, ability to read, and patience.
