Have you got a spare key? If so, give it a try before you start troubleshooting hardcore. Sometimes over time, the contacts on the chip in the key get worn down enough that they don't make contact like they should. If a good connection isn't made, the car doesn't "see" the key in the ignition as being the right key.

Try cleaning the key you're using too if you don't have a spare.

Sounds like a bad starter, not the vats, (or starter relay)

Check the purple wire on the passenger side shock tower, and see if you get +12 in the crank position. If yes, then it looks to be the starter.

Check out my post and responses from Mr. Dude over in the conversion section. 88 GTA w/ LS1, sounds like same problem. If you wait 3 to 4 minutes and try again does it start right up?

I'm going to give the contact cleaner a shot and hope it helps. May have to go find a new key for this one if that doesn't work.

A dead starter won't click.

You need to measure at the purple wire and see if you have voltage in the cranking position of the key.

The Vats system will tell you if it is active & not allowing a start by flashing the security light.
If is not doing that you need to check the purple wire as slow has said twice.

cool i went to a GM garage and they want 55$ to "diagnose" the problem, but most likely they think that it is the key reader in my ignition. Could the key reader really be that unreliable? I only have 45k on my car and it's a 98ss.
