Default Why do M6 tunes have "shift speeds"

2000 T/A stock tune. I'm a noob and it just doesn't make much sense to me. Obviously this is for an A4 as there are only 4 gear options and not six. I know the A4 tunes are different from the M6's so why is there an overlap, possibly operating system related?

Also, where is the best place to ask these seeminly stupid newbie questions. I hate to crowd the boards where people are working rather than wondering like myself?

What do you mean? Why does a manual tune have spots for automatic related variables? Visa-versa.

If that is why you are asking I am sure it has to do with the fact that they use one PCM and to avoid mixing up variables they reserve spots for every feature even if the vehicle doesn't come with it. Makes is easier if you develop or program more than one vehicle to know that memory location X is always the same no matter what exact car.
