Default Thoughts on msd coil packs.

If you were changing out your coils would you go with the msd or the truck coils. Were talking new not bone yard stuff that you don't no how much time has on them.BTW this is for hi horsepower app only.

I have MSD coils on my gto strictly as an appearance mod. They make NO difference in power or driveability, they just look nice. BTW, the stock truck coils on my whipple blown silverado are still fine at 240k miles.

I'm not sure if anyone has maxed out the stock coils yet.

I was under the impression that the 1200 turbo 427 LS1 that w2w did was using stock coils of the truck coils.

Buddy of mine had them on his GTO. Don't think they made any more power at WOT but they did make the idle smoother.

Well if thats the case then ****** them bitches up.

Nobody can argue that they are def better then the stock ones. Its just that the stockers are so good there really isn't a reason to change them.

I had the MSD coils fail on the dyno on a supercharged LS1. Halfway through a run power dropped straight down about 80 horsepower and the car started misfiring. (this was after a few full pulls were made and the car was running great). After a cool down I made another run and the exact same thing happened, dropping about 80hp in the middle of the run. My only other experience with those coils was a stock car that came in with a misfire problem and the coils were leaking all over the engine, so I decided to swap on a set of truck coils.

With the truck coils on and no other changes the car made a clean pass and their was no longer the 80hp drop in the middle of the run, but damage was allready done as the car was burning coolant out of the exhaust.

The car came to our shop with those coils but from now on I will not tune any LS1 cars with the MSD coils. I don't know exactly what was happening when they failed but the engine showed major detonation upon teardown and had blown headgaskets and a cracked block.

Yeah I've heard of them failing. I think it was just that one or two batches and its been fixed from what I can gather.

Maybe thats why they are cheap. They are usually ~$90 a pop and thats why nobody buys them. They get the truck coils which are just as good and paint them red or whatever color they want.
