Default Should we break in our new engine before tuning?

This question is not as easy as I thought it would be. We just put together a new 383 stroker LS1 with a 224/230 cam, AFR heads and FAST intake/throttle body and 38 lb. injectors. The engine is running OK on its STOCK TUNE. I was thinking we would put some miles on the engine before taking it to get tuned, so the rings would be seated. But we're noticing some rotten-egg smell from the exhaust (like the mixture is rich and overheating the converters). We don't want to overheat the cats and damage them. Should we tune the motor first before driving it too much, or should we just get it tuned, even though the motor only has about 50 miles on it.

BTW, the SES light is NOT on.

I would definitely think that getting a baseline tune done on the engine before running it too much is a good idea. I know you also don't want it running rich and washing down the cylinder walls or your rings won't seat properly. I would see if some place local could do a quick base tune, or try getting one that is close to your setup from the EFI-Live tune repository if you have that software, and getting it loaded in for break-in.

Yes, ideally you want the base tune + break-in before going for power.

If you want to drive it around for a while, put the stock injectors back in it.

How come a reputable engine builder told me 3K miles of breakin with dyno oil to properly seat rings ...................

Some engine builders have different ways to break in a motor.

We usually break them in ON the dyno...this lets us control both RPM and Load, and check the Air/Fuel so that we aren't going rich and washing the cylinders.

Sounds like you are doing a good initial breakin. But what about places like SDPC that recommend 3,000 miles with dyno oil ????
