Default cluster swapping

Hi gang. I have a couple questions to ask about the gauge clusters in our cars. First off what years will swap out without any problems? I have a 2001 6spd TA. Do I have to have the exact same cluster out of another car or will one out of a 99 TA work? Does it have to be the same tranny? Also when I install this newer cluster will it read the same mileage as the one I take out of my car or will it read the amount of mileage that was on the original car it was taken out of? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Don't know, but beware of used '99 clusters - some pegged the gauges on startup and reset the trip odometer to zero with low battery voltage. GM even issued a TSB for it.

Any 99+ Cluster will work.
You will not get to keep your milage.
You will have to trigger a programming sequence which can be done without any computers.

From what I remember:

Pull ebrake so headlights don't come on:

Turn ignition on and leave in run position for ~30 minutes.
Turn off for 10 minutes.
Repeat about 4 times. Maybe more.

It took awhile for me but the cluster finally learned. The first couple of times when the car comes on each module sends out a code unique to the car. When the cluster fires up it sends out a code from the old car. The other modules ignore that code and the cluster is left out. As you turn the key on and off the cluster will learn the code and start to transmit that one.

It takes a long time to do this. I guess GM did it to discourage theft.

I did not do that when I replaced my cluster, just slapped it in and started it up - everything worked.

There are shops that can reset your mileage for you if you sign a waiver. Call your local GM dealer and ask where they send clusters for repair. That is the shop you want to talk to.
