Default Monitor LS1?

I'm finishing up a swap here in a few weeks and was curious if there was a way I could monitor the engine when we fire it up. Can I use the OBDII port and my laptop? What connections do I need and what programs can do this? Not really wanting to tune it just watch what all the engine is doing and confirm my stock 80's gauges are reading right.

EFILIVE and HPTuners both have a data logger you can use to monitor the engine during runtime. Also, if you have a TunerCat OBD2 interface module, you can purchase MXScan which can also provide runtime engine data.

Alternatively you could buy a SAE-J2534-1 solution and use PCMSCAN.

Well I have a laptop and I'm using a stock OBDII port from a '99 Camaro. With that I can get a hold of HPtuners for my laptop. Is that all I need? If it is then thats great, then I just need to find the proper cable.
