question about the air pump system
hey what sensors detect that the air pump is "working" o2's or what? i dont have cats and was going to just block off the plates But what about just putting in 2 like small k&n filters on the pump so it still turns on and stuff?

Just take out the pump. I'm sure it's diagnosed by the pcm, which would detect if there is a short to ground, or an open in the circuit.
O2s dont come into play until closed loop.

Air pump is run off a relay so even if you remove the pump the PCM will never know.
The pump is also only running for about 5 minutes after startup, most to all of that time the engine is in open loop operation.

Yes, it will. If the AIR pump is working properly, the rear set of o2s will read no fuel in the exhaust, because the AIR pump pumps air into the exhaust to be burned with excess fuel that is squirted during open loop.
If the pump doesn't work, the rear o2s will fluctuate like the front ones, setting off the SES.
trust me, I've had the SES come on due to this.

IMO if you're going to leave all that **** in there, just leave it connected.
My car was programmed to run the AIR pump for 90 seconds at cold start, so unless you're worried about a peformance loss during warm up, leave it there and connected.
