Default Bad engine computer? What do you think?

Well my buddy has a 87 Iroc 305TPI A4. One day he was driving down the highway and the car shut off. I took a look at it, I thought it might be the fuel pump but wasn't sure. I plugged my Snap-On scanner and and noticed there isn't a check engine light on when you turn the key to the ON position. Well a little farther in the scanner doesn't communicate with the ECM. So I'm thinking ECM, what do you guys think?

Check fuses first.

There is two 30 amp fuses that have pcm and pcm/fp both were good. I'm thinking either bad ground of bad batt. to the pcm or the pcm itself. I'll see if I have a book on 3rd Gen.
