Talking Maf Sensor causing car not to start?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and own an 1988 camaro, I just had my car diagnosed and the computer tells me it's the MAF sensor that's causing me the problem. Car started dying at idle and then it started to progressivly get worse. Now when I go to give it gas it chuggs like to tomorrow and then all of a sudden she died on me. Now I can't even get it to start. Is there any possible way that a bunked MAF sensor can cause the EMC to not deliver fuel to the injecters b/c I know the MAF controls fuel/air ratio....could the bunked sensor be telling the car not to send fuel...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance....

a newbie to the site....JAY
