Default L92 Burned Valves

My buddy works at a Chevy dealer as a parts chaser and the other day had to get off the truck a complete L92 truck motor. He asked about it and was told that a customer had put a K&N air filter in the truck. He was told that it contaminated the MAF and burned every valve on the motor because it ran lean.
I told him I thought that was B.S. Would the O2 sensor pick this up and adjust the A/F ratio.Does this motor have a MAP as a backup.I mean this does not sit well with me.I cant believe that the computer would let this go for so long that it would do this much damage to the motor.
He told me this will cost the customer $11,000 for the motor and labor.

I dont have any other info to give you but what are your thoughts.A new truck was in my future but now I dont know.I got 90,000 on my K&N in my current truck and have had no problems. Thanks

I posted this on the truck website just getting some other thoughts.

Fuel trims would compensate to a point - then an SES light would be thrown. I'd be highly supsicious of them blaming the filter.

Default Miss Diagnosis

I think the tech saw this as a way for GM not to pay for the motor. The customer doesnt know and just pays.I took my truck to them for oil changes and such.I think Ill go elswere. Thanks

yes.. if your O2's arent cycling for a while.. it will throw a code

A MAF failure doesnt mean your engine dies...

The customer probly oiled the hell out of the filter which completely covered the mass air meter. This will cause the truck to run lean because it can not read the right amount of air entering the engine.

I've made a habit of washing the K+N before installing in a vehicle when new.

This condition is rare, but it can happen if you SOAK the filter in oil.
GM does have a bullitin regarding the use of aftermarket filters, so
if someone isn't too tech savvy, they should consult with the dealer
before tampering with their ride while still under warranty.
Possible on the $11,000 figure ???

Default L92 Crate

My friend said it was a complete long block .Plus labor to intall.I was not there but he is a staight up guy.No reason to inflate the price. The dealer was throwing the whole engine away and installing a new one.

I would have thought it would have cooked a piston before burning all the valves.
