Default 160 Thermostat Tune??

I am getting ready to replace my thermostat to a 160 deg tstat and was wandering what other changes I will need to tune for other than the 'Fan On' temperatures??? Should I install, change the fan temps, then re-tune my VE table, MAF, and spark table? What other things change when it runs cooler?? Thanks in advance!!

Once you have set it all up for best cooling you
may be able to take advantage of more spark
advance and/or leaner mixture. But I'd do this
last.

I would recommend using the 180 stat instead. IMHO, the 160 stat will yeild reduced gas milage and less than optimal performance results. The best dyno runs and track performance results that I have witnessed have been with the ECT reporting ~190 F. Colder is not always better for combustion with aluminum heads and blocks.

the 160 is actually not a 160... its a 175. the coolant actually gets to 197 on my car at MAX with my fans set where they are.

I do not see a problem with his car not getting to 190... unless he wants his fans on all the time.

Well, sort of. I guess it depends on how you look at it. Although the 160 begins to open at 160, it is not fully open until 175, which is what you allude to. And I suggest that no radiator is so efficient that it would remain at 175 and go no higher. And I agree, 190 seems to be a reasonable objective for a "normal" car under "normal" circumstances.

With a 160*F stat, my car runs at 172*F-175*F at highway speeds. A 180*F stat will run at stock temp.

When using a cooler stat, zero the negative spark cells in the ECT spark table.

I agree. I use the 180 t-stat on my current setup and see my best track results with the ECT right at 194 degrees and a low IAT.

are you speaking of the actual NEGATIVE numbers IN the table, or are you speaking of the negative values of the ECT that is on the side/top depening on the tuning program?

The negative numbers in the table. You don't want negative timing at cold temps. Some calibrations also retard timing at the higher ECT, that is a good thing.
