Shop tuning tools
A friend is starting a mechanic shop and wants to get a Tech II scanner.
There is a significant cost difference between the Tech II, HP Tuners, and EFI Live. What does the Tech II do that the others can't do, or vice versa?
I've read the stickies and didn't find much of anything about the Tech II.
I'm looking at possibly getting HP Tuners since it supports more vehicles then EFI Live and was thinking of splitting the cost with him if its a good solution as a diagnostics tool, scan tool for the shop.
Any help is greatly appreciated since this is all new territory for me.

The Tech 2, and Tuning suites like EFI Live and HP tuners should be thought of as completely different entities
The Tech 2 is a very powerful diagnostic tool, much more capable for diagnostics then either tuning suites, but it cannot tune your car.
Efi live and HP tuners, are good diagnostic tools in thier own right (for engine control related problems), and of course they can tune your vehicle

The techII has capabilities the tuning suites dont. If you're planning on specializing in late model diagnostics, the techII is a good choice. If you want to be a tuner shop, buy a tuning suite.
The techII covers things like BCM, IPC (instrument panel cluster), EBCM, air bag (SRS) systems, as well as PCMs, TCMs, VCMs.
The tuning suites only do PCMs, VCMs and TCMs.
The techII can reflash PCMs, VCMs, TCMs, but it cannot edit. Only can reflash GM updates. You have to purchase the SPS program though.
