Default Stuck with Hypertech???

When I bought my 2000 Z28 last summer, they guy told me that he had it programed with a hypertech tuner. He was in the process of moving when I bought the car, he had said that he had already packed up all the stuff in the garage and wasn't sure where the actual hand-held tuner was. To make things simple the tuner got lost/thrown out during the move. I was planning on getting a new tune with my headers but have been told that I can't get a tune unless I have the factory tune currently programed. Is this true and am I stuck with the hypertech tune? I know there is more potential for this engine with a proper tune. Is my only option to go to a dealer and get a re-flash and then take it to a tune shop? I don't want to end up paying an arm and a leg and jump through hoops to get a new tune but my car needs it. What are my options?

the hypertech I believe locks the pcm after the tune is flashed so you will probably have to get another pcm. I had the same problem on my vette.

Yeah that is what I have been told that Hypertech prevents any other tuning program from making changes. Is there a way to know for sure if the PCM has been programed with a hypertech tuner short of trying to re-tune it?

they haven't locked any pcms that I have seen. I would just have a dealer reflash back to stock, and you should be fine.

Hypertech will not lock the PCM, If you intend to get it tuned you do not need to go to the dealer to get it reflashed, the tuner can do that, I have overridden Hyper tunes with no problems....

So I gave Bryan and Speed inc. a call and talked things over with him. He said that they would have no problem with it having a hypertech tune on the PCM when I bring it in. So once I get my long tubes installed i'll be taking a drive down to Speed Inc. Thanks for the help guys.

No, the hypertech locks itself to your car so that you can't use the handheld to tune other cars without pulling the tune out of the original car.

I've overwritten Hypercrap tunes also. You don't need to put it back to stock. Your tuner should have stock files on hand, if not there are plenty of places to get them if he wants to start fresh on the tune.

Yeah I misinterpreted the whole "Locked" term. The hypertech tuner locks itself onto your PCM so you can't tune multiple cars with one tuner. Bryan said that they would flash a stock tune back on there and start from the stock tune. Thanks again guys...now I just have to order my LT's!
