Default IAC counts too low?

I always see talk of getting IAC counts lowered to help get idle surge taken care of, mostly with suggestions to slightly open the throttle blade and do a tps relearn.

If your IAC count is very low, like 8-20 at idle, should they be somehow raised up?

If so, how would you raise them up?

Close the throttle blade or make the hole in the blade smaller. FWIW the stop screw's primary purpose is to keep the blade from sticking in the bore when closed.

I'm wondering if that is the cause of my surge? Too much air?

I guess I'll have to put the screw back in from the bottom. I have it threaded in from the top, but it evidently won't go in far enough.

When the IAC has to bury itself trying to choke off air, this makes
the system "wind up" and become unstable. Look for vacuum leaks
as well as overdrilled holes etc.

I did indeed drill out the TB blade hole to 1/4" a year or so ago, right after cam swap.

What I didn't realize (until just now) is that maybe 6 months ago, when I ported my throttle body, I also swapped the throttle screw around so that it screwed in from the top instead of from the bottom.

Now the more I think about it maybe it just isn't letting the blade close enough and I'm wondering if this has been my whole problem since February

Thumbs up

Evidently, the inverted throttle blade screw has been the issue I've had since February.

With throttle screw re-installed like stock, my logged IAC counts are now between 50-60 when warm...very, very slight intermittent surge, and no hanging idle or cruise control effect...

Sometimes it's the smallest things that create the most headaches...

How do you check to see what the counts are? I have EFI Live so can I use that somehow?

On my HPTuners, it is logged as IAC position and IAC Desired Position.

I'd assume EFI Live has the same, or similar, name for it.

Thanks, I'll have to take a look. I guess I've never looked before.

I have never seen a car that I couldnt screw the screw in far enough. I have also never drilled a throttle blade. No sense in it.

I can open up the throtle blade with the screw. Now even if you reset the tps your tp voltage will still be off. For that I make the tps adjustable to clock it back to its original position so that voltage is at .6

Just elongate the holes in the tps sensor. Works like a charm.
