Exclamation Help with steering wheel airbag...

I have a 2000 Bird and I need a "how to guide" with images on
how to safely remove a steering wheel "airbag", "wheel" and
steering "column".

I'm upgrading from the factory wheel with no radio controls to
one with radio controls and I need to understand how to do so
safely without deploying the airbag.

I have the new steering wheel and steering column pre-wired
for the wheel, I just need to get the old wheel off, pull the
column and install the new column, wheel and airbag.

Thanks

Are there any Austin Tx 4thGen clubs?

alright, I don't have images but I can walk you thru it.

1. Disconnect Battery

2. On the Back of the wheel, There are two open holes. Inside each of these holes are a Torx Bolt. Remove each and the airbag will pull away from the steering wheel.

3. Unplug the Airbag wiring harness

4. MAKE SURE YOU WHEELS ARE STRAIGHT. To Pull the wheel you will need a steering wheel puller. You can get these at any auto parts store. There is one bolt in the middle of the Wheel. Using a 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar, remove the bolt.

5. Attach the pulle to the wheel using the two supplied bolts. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CORRECT THREAD PITCH AND BOLT SIZE.

6. Tighten the puller Until the wheel Pops off. You will have to unplug the radio control harness and pull the horn wire, which has a spring on the end.

Installation is the reverse of removal, Just make sure you line the wheel up straight, and you wont be reattaching the radio control wiring harness.
