Default 1976 TA question

My brother has a 76 TA w/ a 3 speed auto. Would any 700r4 just bolt up to the motor or would we need a specific year or version?

Thanks in advance....

You'll need to get the an adapter from summit racing (http://store.summitracing.com/partde...)&autoview=sku or a 200R4 will bolt right up.

probably need a custom driveshaft also, since i think the th350 and 700r4 are different lengths.

You want a 200R4, same bolt pattern and same length as the TH350, it will bolt right in.

Forgot to add. The Driveshaft will need to be changed for the 700r4 and along with the crossmember. For the 200r4 the crossmember will need to be custom. I think you can order one already to go.

You guys know that the short tailshaft Th350 and 400 that came in 2nd gens is the same length as a 700R4 and a 2004R right? The yoke needs changed for some swaps, the rear mount is in a different spot for all of them, except a 2004R and aTH400 have the same length to the mount from the bellhousing. Now the need for an adapter can confound things with the 700 and the driveshaft. A Th400 crossmember from a 70-74 Bird will work for the 2004R. You cant just move it back like you can in the 77-81 cars, then drill new holes. The subframe is shorter in the earlier cars.

I suppose I could build a crossmember for you if you want to swap an OD in there. I have a 70-74 Th400, 77-81 Th350, and a 79 4 Speed member sitting right here.

The big thing with a 2004R or a 700R4 swap is getting the TV cable set right, and the geometry correct on the throttle shaft. If you dont get the TV right you will burn that sucker up very quick. It is much more than a kick down like a Th350 has, it controls line pressure, shift points, and shift firmness, as well as kicking down when you stomp it.

The other thing you should address is the converter lock up, a simple 12v wire with a switch would work if you remember to unlock it when you come to a stop. TCI and B&M both have boxes that control the lock up, and include a connection so when you apply the brakes it unlocks the converter. You can also swap to a non lock up converter, but if you are doing it to gain mileage, the lock up gets you another 1-3 mpg and 100-400 lower cruise rpm, with a stock stall more with a bigger stall.

If you dont believe they are the same length I can take a pic of them all side by side for you.

the problem is when my brother built it, he (nor the shop) knew what was in the rear end, they swapped 2.42 gears for a set of 3.73's, it might just be easier (and cheaper) to change the rear end gears again...

Thanks for yalls time.
