Default 1998 Trans Am Dash Overlay

Ok, so I bought a 1998 T/A back in Feb. and I want to change out the red lights on the dash for blue (bright LED's). I saw in a magazine where they did this to a 2000(?) T/A and it looked bada**. Does anyone know where to get a different overlay? I pulled the gauge cluster to look at the back side and it just has clear bulbs so there is obviously a red film or something between the black cover and the circuitry. Any help would be great.

Thanks for you time guys.

This link (https://ls1tech.com/forums/appearanc...ght-color.html) should contain alot about your question.

A google search for 6le will also help.

I don't know if 6LE is going to be doing the overlays for a while. Last I heard, McNord is trying to get the equipment so he can do it in house instead of relying on outside vendors. I highly recommend their overlays though, and that's what i run in mine, coincidentally also with a blue LED conversion.

The LED's are easy, just get some from superbrightleds.com and all you have to do is take the instrument cluster out as one piece and they plug into the back of it. Nothing complicated at all. The main thing in your car is that I do believe that like you are saying, the stock Trans Am overlay is tinted so that the light comes through in red

One thing to consider, leave a regular bulb in the cluster, like the high beam light, if you replace all of the bulbs with led's they won't dim.

does the cluster's light color not come from the overlay? I didn't think you had to replace any bulbs.

There are clear (yellowish) stock bulbs in the cluster behind the overlay. The trans ams/firebirds have a red film in the overlays. The combination gives you that red/orange stock color.

In order to get a different color, you would need a clear overlay by either removing the red film or getting a new overlay (6LE). You will also need to replace the cluster bulbs with whatever color you want. This would be the time to switch to LEDs. Do a search for the write-ups on here.

I thought I remembered reading a write-up about the 6LE's having a film or tint to change color... Anyways, thanks.

Nope, they specifically do them clear so you can change the bulbs to any color you want.
