Default I bought a little piece of firebird history today.

There is a car show at a gm muscle car museum a little bit north of me and i had gone there in february while i was down here looking for a place. at that time, they had a really cool firebird sign but i didn't buy it because i didn't think i had the room in my suitcase for it. the last 2 times i've been at the museum (once to take a friend there, then again for last months show) they didn't have any in stock. well i went back today for their monthly show and they had them back in stock

It made a nice addition to my garage wall. i decided to display it during the show. Of interesting note is the 98 trans am WS6 hardtop. that must have been an early 98 test mule.

$12.50 and it was at a muscle car museum (muscle car city i think it's called) in punta gorda, florida. It's an old walmart store that someone bought to house their collection of about 200 GM muscle cars including a vette from almost every year, several first and second gen camaros, a few second gen firebirds, plus a bunch of chevelles. it also has a few chevies from the 20's on up. it's a really cool museum.

here's the website for it.

Nice sign. I remember this being mentioned in earlier threads about this sign. Now that you've provided such a nice photo of the sign, it almost appears as if that the front facia on that T/A has been photoshopped. The fog lights look funky and the right side turn signal doesn't look quite right. While there were 2 '98 mules / prototype T/As built w/ HT, this one looks like it may have been a HT Formula w/ the front facia and tail from a T/A photoshopped. What do others think??

In retrospect, I wish I had determined what colors those 2 HT T/As were while I was generating my breakdowns.

Nope, you couldn't even order one.

The red ram air car on the tin sign also has 16" wheels on it

You might have to double check this but the two hardtops are:

2G2FV22G2W2200004 - Red with gray manual, built 4/1/1997

2G2FV22G3W2200013 - Black with gray automatic, built 5/9/1997

I have (and am looking at) this sign right now. Most definitely not a PS job or any adjustment. It's the way it printed onto the metal sheet, the texturing and outlines didn't come out quite right if you look at the other cars as well.

So I'd say that it could very well be a file photo of the prototype cleaned and trimmed for the collage. Not the best quality but it makes bitchin' garage art behind my bird.

I happened across that place in January, that place is badass. I met the owner, he is cool as hell. I liked the '02 ZL1 Camaro-1 of 2 automatics made by GMMG.

that brings up an interesting question. i assume they were still building 97's in april of 97? did they run the early 98 cars on the line at the same time as the 97s?

I dont have that info but I do know that the first 99 model was built before the last 98 so I'd guess 97's and 98's were being built together for a short time.

Factories have shutdown during the Summer so that the machinery can be retooled to begin assembling the new models. I'd highly doubt that two different model year cars would be coming off the assembly line at the same time as everything would be geared up for producing the new models. Now that wouldn't stop them from hand-assembling a car or two to showcase the changes made to the new model while the current model year was still coming off the assembly line.

I have that in sign in my garage - you can see it in the background by the stairs. I notice it everyday and it makes me chuckle (in a sad way) since it states "The Muscle Car Lives" then they killed it - so they added the disclaimer "into the 21st Century" some time after 2002.

I'd really like to find poster versions of the three '98 Trans Am ads - "The Other Red Meat" and the other two. I guess I can find a digital version and have them made.

I ended up with one of the "Other Red Meat" posters and it's been hanging in my office for several years. It gets a lot of attention when people are in my office - along with the other pics and posters I have of my car.

Good luck - hope you find them all!

Indeed, THANKS.

Both of those are '98 Y82 T/A coupes and neither have CC1/DE4 t-tops. Both have RPO: WD1 IDENTIFICATION - PILOT VEHICLE (13 built in '98 w/ this RPO). Note that this is different than RPO: WD2 IDENTIFICATION - PROTOTYPE VEHICLE, of which only 7 were built in '98. Neither car has RPO WS6. Both have PA6 WHEEL,STYLED(PAINTED) STYLED PAINTED WHL(PA6).

My guess is the car that was photographed for the sign is this red HT TA pilot car that had a WS6 hood and chrome 16" rims swapped onto it at some point later. Can't explain the dorky looking front facia, unless that pilot part was messed up, maybe they attempted a photoshop of the image after the fact. If the sequence numbers in the VINs are any indication, these pilot cars were amongst the first 13 '98s built.
