1993 Trans Am Lt1 Missing/Shutting down.
Hi guys, Im new to the site. Been here many times (not as a member) looking at forum threads, and I have run across something tricky and decided its time to sign up! Anywho. Iv got a 1993 Trans Am, 6-speed, bone stock except Cat back exhaust and CAI. When I first bought the car every once in a while it would not want to start unless i gave it a little throttle to keep it running untill it cleared up a minute or two later. It has always ran a bit rich (i smell fuel). But recently it has developed a miss or buck at lower RPM and cruising speeds. And the other day, i was driving when it started to buck and miss BAD! and completely shut off. I managed to get it started a few times with some throttle. It would run and miss for a few seconds, then completely shut off again (this is a SHUT OFF, like im turning the ignition off, not running out of fuel). I let it sit for 5-10 min, Started it back up, kept it running with a bit of throttle, it cleared up, and i drove it home . I noticed my voltage was quite low, and crept back up on the way home. Any Ideas??

I should have been more specific with how it shuts off. It is just the engine that shuts off like im taking away its ignition. I still have power to everything else (lights, dash ext ext). It just acts like i had taken the key out of run position without doing so. would a battery short still do this?

Alright guys, I was luck enbough to have it die in the autozone parking lot.. I replaced the coil, and thought it fixed the problem. It ran fine for a bit then quit again. Also i tried an ICM, and it didnt start while the new one was connected. Im getting 39-45 psi fuel pressure and iv noticed, while driving down the road, it will quit and the rpm guage will drop to zero, even tho it is in gear still turning the motor. and alot of the time if i keep it in gear, and rolling it will start its self back up.

Try opti harness wire going to it. I had same problem. Do this first! start car, while engine running, wiggle the wire that plugs into opti between engine face and water pump, its hard to see it down in there but its the connector that plugs into opti, again wiggle it while car is running, if it dies then thats your problem, if it dont then check the whole wire back up to top off the egine and check the other wire end connector! good luck, tell us how it works out please....

Wow thanks pumas! its always the simple stuff.. I wiggled the wire around while it was running, and sure as ****, it stalled. if lightly pry the connector to one side it will run fine. Im ordering a new opti harness today. If that doesnt fis the problem, I know its inside the Opti.. Thanks for all the help Guys! Ill keep you updated.

No problem buddy, that one was for free. When i had that problem. I damn near replaced everything in the engine bay to fig that out. I was far from home when it happen and i thought let me try wigginlin primary or ignition related wires and walla, i found it to be the problem. To temp fix it i wedge paper to one side in that connector housing to get me home. After that i save money and replaced wire and msd opti! enjoy.....

Replaced the harness, still stalls. So i know its the opti. Thats what i get for getting an autozone opti i suppose. Time to get an msd opti or 24x convertion.

I had the same problem- switched to a MSD opti (which I have had a few and been happy with) and the car still cut off. It was the connector getting loose inside harness. We took the connector out and spliced the wires together and haven't had an issue for a year.
