.I recently bought an automatic 1998 trans am. The kid had the handle and button broken on the shifter . So I was wondering If i had to get the whole shifter or just the handle and button?

Handle.
Check Ebay.
Pull the c-clip out of the front of the handle, pull the handle off, install new replacement handle, replace c-clip.
Done.

You can buy ANY later model gm shifter that the C clip slides from the back. This could be a Camaro, Olds, Cadi, Grand Am, etc. All can be found on Ebay. I've seen Trans Am shifter ***** on Ebay too. If clip is missing, you will need to buy one or make sure shifter is sold with it. Careful buying the after market shifters that add a couple inches to the height

I've got an old Camaro **** with the clip that I'd give ya.
Either come & get it, or pay for shipping to GI & you can have it.

(1st, 2nd, or even the 3rd style shown in the listing shown today. The 1998 models should be a grey color, not the ebony/black. Ebony interior was 2000-2002.)
