Default Liftgate struts?

My 1997 Formula is in need of new liftgate support struts (the hatchback).

I'm seeing 2 different types....one with spoiler and one without. Mine doesn't have the big Trans Am spoiler (has the smaller wing) - is that what they mean?

I just want to get the correct ones the first time as it looks like it isn't that easy to replace, having to remove part of the interior trim to get to one of the hatch connections.

Thanks!

I imagine both fit the same and the “with spoiler” option will be the stronger of the two. I’d opt for the “with spoiler.” It’s an easy job by the way. I did mine not so long ago.

^ This. For years the community has generally recommended to install the 'with spoiler' strus for everything, which is what I did on my Formula.

It opened the hatch a little more purposefully for a longer period of time than the weaker struts.

Thanks for the info!

Which brand should I choose? Or should I be going with the Max Performance ones?

So I checked out what's currently on my car and it appears it has Stabilus struts. Left is 10284060, right is 10279867 (no idea how I have 2 different part numbers as I am the original owner of the car, never replaced the liftgate struts either)

I guess Stabilus would be a good choice then? If so, which part number (I see several that fit the car)....

This is a commodity part which always wears out over time. If you are going to keep the car, I would go to a local parts store and go with whoever gives you a lifetime warranty on it.
