Unhappy Noise past 90 mph! What the hell

Hey guys

The last 2 months have been crazy. Did a bunch of work to my 96 WS6. This is what I have done.

1) diff rebuilt, new seals and all
2) yoke / u-joint replaced on my steel driveshaft, they said they balanced it
3) 4 new tires, balanced and all
4) new Competition Clutch stage 2 with a resurface flywheel, SPEC TB

I went up to 90mph the other day and heard a loud humming noise, went away when I slowed down. So it happens 90mph and up. Only thing I think it can be is the driveshaft, but does the aluminum driveshafts help eliminate this? I've done a lot of research, I come up with that.

Any advice would help, everything is new, even had the diff rechecked "had a small leak" but the car hasn't been driven much between the rebuild and check up.

Was it a rotational noise? as in did it get louder as you sped up?

What size gears did you put in the rear?

It is very very faint around 85 but as soon as you go past 90, it is a constant loud noise, could be rotational, everything was left to stock specifications.

Hmm. I only asked about the gears because big aftermarket ones can be loud at faster speeds.

There's no shaking or vibration, just noise right?

Yep, steel driveshaft. I had to replace it with aluminum on all both my LT1 A4 cars to get rid of it. My LS1 A4 originally had 2.73s and the steel driveshaft, and I replaced it as soon as I got the car without even checking if it caused it.

Noise=vibration. I'd think just the normal road wear on the drive shaft over the years would be enough to throw it just slightly out of balance to where it would make noise at high speeds. I have to expect that it didn't make noise from the factory.

Can you just have the steel shaft cleaned of rust and re-balanced?

There was a factory bulletin about this back in the day of the LT1 cars. GM recommended replacement with the aluminum shaft. I had GM connections back then and the factory replaced it. If you want a permanent fix, this is the way to go. Aluminum driveshafts aren't hard to come by.

Thanks for that info, I feel comfortable now investing 125$ for a aluminum driveshaft, they are all over eBay

Actually Rev, I have a question for you, when the drive shaft is removed, does any transmission fluid leak out?

Yes, a little. If you can swap them out and in quick, it's not enough to worry about. But if the operation will take a little time you can use one of those tranny end caps.

My window seal breaks loose at 120mph and sounds like a loud hissing noise. The first time it happened I thought something broke off the car lol

This happens over time as the glass pulls away from the seal. You may want to check to make sure your regulator rivets aren't tearing in to the door and causing your glass to come up short against the seal.

If all is well, you can adjust the glass stops to seat tighter against the seal.
