Default 3rd Gen or Turd Gen?

What are the advantages to owning a 3rd gen trans am or camaro, all i see is a slow boxy car that isn't retaining any value.

Not much advantage really, other than you can get them pretty cheap. I've seen some really good looking ones too. With the $ you save by getting one, you can put a LS1 and other goodies in it for a decent price.

They Were Fast For Their Time. They Were Not Boxy At All.

I love the looks of the 3rd gens. I owned 2 of them, an 86 TA with a 305 5 speed, and an 89 Twentieth Anniversary. Loved them both.

I was actually looking to buy a 3rd gen....but ended up getting a 4th gen. The 3rd gens are starting to go up in value. I would say...now is the time to get one.

I miss my 91. I can see where you get "boxy" from, if you look at the above front end. I prefer the 91-92 model year. Here's mine before I got GTA rims for it.

I think the 3rdgen was a ok platform.. they just needed better intake/exhaust (on 350 & HO305s)
235 hp and 340 lbft of tq wasnt to bad for the day
picks of my slow boxy 3rdgen

Edit: my turd 89 formula 350 ran 14.10 @ 98-99mph in the quarter dead stock. even on good year Gator backs
aluminum heads, SLP cam, SLP shortys and 2otl cat back with a shift kit, and M&H tires it ran 12.50s at 105 (slipping trans LOL) All that and a stock chip Plus a few free tricks I learned
yep they are turds.... mines way faster now

Turd gen. They're cheap, that's the only advantage I see. Like any car they can be made fast and good looking but they sure didn't come that way factory.

Go tell one of the guys with a 89 TA Pace car his car is a turd! Those things are mean, almost got one of them before my LS1, probably will some day.

For their time they were fast and they can be made fast. There is a twined turbo 87' TA IIRC that runs around our town that is in the mid 800's in RWD HP out of the 350.

They are given their pos status because you get the people that buy them and just thrash them, then there are a few gems out there also, but they pale in number anymore.

It was a great highschool car for me. They get a bad wrap for being slow but they are not far off from the LT1's. I had a 92 and added a set of 1.6 rockers and an underdrive pulley. I was running very low 14's and had enough torque to take care of most LT1's on the street. I quess the one advantage was watching the faces of those people as well as mustang owners in disbelief that my "slow" third gen just walked them. The prices are starting to rise. A clean third gen with under 100,000 miles is worth more than an LT1 forth gen.

Yup, they are. I bought my 97 LT1 TA for less than a third gen in equal condition would have cost. Because of their age, alot of the cheaper third gens need ALOT of work.

I still love them though.

3rd gens are sweet cars. id LOVE one for a daily driver, if i didnt need a truck. something about the driving position is just very comfortable, even moreso then in my 4th. the camaros, especially IROCs, are just sexy looking, damn what anyone else says. the firebirds, formulas more then TAs, are sweet and mean with the offset hood bulge. despite the 305 and 350s totally running out of breath around 5k, theyre true stump pullers from the factory, and with enough work can equal or better an LT1. theres nothing wrong with a nice 3rd gen, with a torquey L98.

Nothing wrong with a third gen at all -- I've got three of them...the purple one just hit Historic this year. She's been appraised and insured for $14k and it's only going up, not too bad for a 20 yo car.

They are considerably lighter then the 4th gen. At very least that tends to make them a better choice for autox and road racing when modified. A dime a dozen in stock form, but modified they can perform.
