Default ls1 1st gear pop on deceleration

my buddy has a 1998 pontiac firebird with the ls1 in it. It has alittle over 114,000 miles. Well to give you an idea of what happens lets say hell be going maybe about 10- 20 mph and hell throw it into first and it will pop. it is an auto tranny. But while normal driving it doesnt pop on deceleration or anything. It also is not just one pop it may be a few never just one solid pop. maybe timing is off? Or maybe its just the vforce exhuast system he has on it? Anyone know of the problem or is it even a problem?

Backfire??? Well, LS1s are known for making that kind of noise. My ws6 makes that noise all the time, and I guess that you just have to get used to it. After a while you just learn to love it.
