is this true??
a friend of mine told me that the 98 ws6's only came with a single tail pipe. i didn't really think so cuz i've never noticed it, but he says that's because not many people (around here anyway) have one. so is he full of it or is this a true statement? i just don't see why they would do it. trans ams have always had dual exhaust outlets. thanks.

that's right, but he is trying to say that the exhaust came out of only one single pipe. like, if you were to look at the back of the car you would only see one pipe on either the driver's side or the passenger's side.

1998 Formula WS6 came with a single tailpipe exiting on the driver's side:
1998 Trans Am & Trans Am WS6 came with dual tailpipes that exit within in the openings in the rear bumper cover.
Neither car came with a full true dual exhaust from the factory. It Y-d into a single pipe from the engine and then splits into two tailpipes after the axle on the Trans Am.

I have never seen a factory `98 WS6 that didn't have a single 3.5" tailpipe Formula or Trans Am.(Yes the Trans Am WS6 had a SOTL )The dual pipes didn't come out till `99 because the single tip didn't meet the new drive by noise standards, and some customers complained about no dual exhaust. kinda like the `04 GTO.
Also all SS Camaro's for `98 had the single pipe aswell unless they were optioned with the SLP Dual Dual.
The Single Out Exhaust actually flows better cause of less turbulence inside the mufffler.

(* Unless SS had SLP optional exhaust)

'99+ SS*/WS6 cars came w/ the quiter and more restrictive 2.5" duals. Considering that the '98s were the lowest production year of SS/WS6 cars, it's not surprizing that many people haven't heard of this bit of trivia. I still have my SOTL.
