Default 1997 Firebird TA - Good buy?

Okay. There's a guy locally selling a white T/A, convertible, LS1, fully optioned, 100k miles on the clock. It's an automatic, and it's bone stock. He's wanting 8600 for it. It's got the chrome 5-spoke wheels, white leather, the up-level stereo, cruise control, etc. Power everything. What do you guys think? There's a few rough spots on the convertible top, as well as some minor scuffing on the rear blacked out section of the tail lights. Otherwise, the body is in perfect condition. It even has a thunder chicken on the hood. This'll mostly be a summer car, for me, with the Monte SS being my winter driver. What do you guys think? Is the 8600$ price tag too high? Should I try to talk him down?

- Dammit - I can't edit the title to 1997. :[

Unless its had a conversion its not an LS1...97s were LT1s and that price is extreamly high. All the options you listed are standard on TAs. The miles are high (maybe not for the year but anything over 100,000 is high.) And the top having a "few bad places" in it kills it...tops are expensive! Plus its not a 6spd or a WS6 car. In all honesty $5K would be a stretch on it IMO.

Hm. Well, I'll talk to him about it. I'm going to meet him to look at the car here in about 25 minutes. HE said it was an LS1. Whether or not he actually knows is up in the air. I'll have him pop the hood.

I am sure he just had no idea what he was talking about...he had heard about the great LS1 and had just hoped/assumed he had one. Its kind of like all 3rd Gens with TPIs had "Corvette Motors"....305 or 350 it didnt matter, it was a "Corvette Motor."

dont let the fact that its an LT1 discourage you...Invested correctly under $1000 will have you beating LS1's all day long

With that said i bought my 96' formula for $6500 with 80k on it..but its a WS6 6spd in immaculate condition.

the fact that its an LT1 car has nothing to do with it being overpriced. that car is going for at least $3k over what its worth. kinda defeats the purpose of spending $1k in mods to match an LS1 car when you can find an LS1 car with similiar mileage and in similiar condition for that same price as he's asking for the LT1 TA.

Some guy came up to me last year when I was driving my car and tried to sell me a 97 TA with an LS1 too, some people will say what they think you want to hear to get you to buy it. He only wanted $1k though.
