Default 2008 G8 GT - G88 589 - "Build Thread"

Last updated 8/29/16 post 67...
_____________________________________

Long story short: decided to go from a three-car household down to two so as to put money aside for a larger home. Sold my wife's '12 Malibu and my '02 Camaro and picked up the '08 G8 you see here. For comparison sake, it had 82,5xx when I picked it up last week for $16,500. G88 #589 for those that care.

I'd like to add an intake, headers, and a tune, but my main priority is getting the AFM deleted (electronically for now). I honestly never paid much attention to the L76 engines, but I'm pleasantly surprised to have learned they have the L92 heads and LS3 intake.

I'd love to see this section get more action (and that is certainly a goal of mine as a mod), but in the mean time, is there a preference between G8Board and Grrrr8? Any nuances or whatnot that you'd suggest I pay attention to with the car would be helpful as well.

I'll be updating this thread as time progresses just as I did with my Camaro thread: https://ls1tech.com/forums/chevrolet...ld-thread.html

Anyone who followed my Camaro build thread knows I document everything in detail. This includes listing anything that is not as it came from GM. Even things as insignificant as wipers will be listed if they are not GM/ACDelco replacements.

Feel free to comment about anything!

-Steve

Subbed. Good luck with this one. I'm sure that car seat fits a little better than in the Camaro.

I am going to try and get AFM tuned out very soon so as to avoid any lift issues. I'd like to add Vararam, long tubes, and a street tune by next spring. The problem is that I promised my wife I would not make this any louder. This is why I want to keep my stock mid pipe/resonator and the stock axle back. I'm likely just going to get a pair of cutouts to run right off the collectors and then install a pair of converters after those. I'm still learning more about this engine/platform, so who knows what may change.

Congrats on the G8.

As far as boards, I cannot truly help. I normally just poke around on g8board.com, but have on the other one as well from time to time. Now, get to modding!

You'd be surprised how quiet a good longtube header/exhaust combo is with these cars. Look into Solo Performance exhaust. I have Kooks longtubes and their Mach Shorty system with high flow cats. (Although different now since I'm cammed,) the cabin noise is pretty calm when you're just cruising under normal throttle, but it screams under hard throttle. Best of both worlds.

Can't make the sound crazy, and money is of course an issue BUT!!.... The wifey has to understand that need for savageness that is in your DNA.

I'm thinking I settled on Kooks mid-length 1-7/8"/cats combo while also adding a pair of QTP cutouts

Not only is that engine cover installed from the factory, but there is also this smaller, insulated cover on top of the manifold to help with NVH from the AFM. That got yanked tonight since I couldn't sleep:

I figured I'll add a pic of the Yokohama AS530's and the calipers the previous owner had painted. At first I did not like the red calipers, but my wife does, so...

After pulling the acoustic cover off the other night, my OCD kicked in due to the funk that had gathered under the covers from the previous owner assumingly being "out of sight, out of mind" with everything under the heat traps. Much nicer, but I still need to pull the TB and manifold to clean it out (which I'll do when I install Vararam).

Interestingly, I found some USA-sourced stuff on the Holden

I'll also add that it is truly a pleasure to be working on an engine that's not half under the cowl

Much better, I didnt want to say anything earlier but that engine was pretty dusty and dirty looking. Looks like those covers acted as dirt traps.

Back in the early days of this forum, GRRRR8 was widely advocated because of politics and control freak stuff on G8Board. So I belong to the former, not the latter.

I've periodically considered taking over my wife's G8, selling one of my Formulas, and getting her an SUV. She's agreeable, but although I've come to really like the car, I still prefer my f-bodies.

Nice G8 you have there. I've had mine 6 years and I love it, best car I ever had. I'm also thinking about the Kooks mids, let me know how you like them if you pull the trigger.

I have Solo axlebacks (which are straight pipes) with the factory mid muffler and it sounds good. Kooks long tubes with catted mid pipes would be too loud with the Solo axlebacks since I'd have to eliminate the mid muffler.
