Default Help with rear end on 04 A4 Goat

My wife's car is making a thunking sound coming from the rear end when I accelerate hard from a stop, accelerate while turning, and when shifting into 2nd at WOT (Auto car with a stock 4l60E) I took the diff cover off, looks ok I guess, but there are some wierd shiny spots on some of the gears, IE it looks as if it's been wearing funny. The halfshaft coming from the pumpkin on the right side is also loose; there is play in it and I can move it by hand freely. Is there a clip that is internal that holds the halfshaft in place? The U joints appear to be fine as far as I can tell. The left side is tight and cannot be moved back and forth by hand. Any suggestions?

Looks like it could be big bucks Time to invest in a 9'. I had my T/A gears sheer off over time, once they died just the sound of the grinding bare metal was enough to make my ears and teeth go insane. Good Luck

There's no grindin, just that clunking sound for now. Im thinkng that the right side hlf shaft is just loose somehow. There was no metal shavings in there at least. Im praying it's something simple

I put in Mobil 1 synthetic for limited slip (Or so it said on the bottle.) I havent driven the car a lot since then, so if that's the wrong stuff it likely hasnt hurt it. I only drove it around the block to make sure I put it back together right.

Take the shaft off and check the outer stub nut that hold the shaft in the hub. O yea put locktite on ALL the bolts.

Thanks for the help guys. It's coming back apart again tomorrow. Im thinking I'll just order some performance CV axles, they arent too expensive. The rear end is fine as far as I can tell.

just becuase it says limited slip, doesnt nessacarily mean it has the correct friction modifier in it.

When mine was making a weird noise, i pulled the cover, inspected it, and replaced with Royal purple 74w 140 with friction modifier in it.

After about a week the noises all but stopped and after about 2 weeks, i never heard them again.

IDK, but make sure you are using the correct fluid back there, or it can **** **** up worse.
