thinking about a GTO
So I am looking at a new vehicle. The 2 cars I am really looking at is LS2 GTO or 350z. Now both cars will be 6 speeds since I am looking for most mpgs. Now I love both cars, so I am also kind of torn now both cars do get the mileage I am looking for mid 20's on the freeway my current vehicle gets 16mpg which is really low it seems but noone can find anissues with it (07 mercury mariner oh wait it is a ford product which is probably half the issue) I previously had a 98 ss camaro but upkeep became overly expensive (about 2k a month in repairs so my guess is it was beat to hell before I got it.
So my questions are what do the GTO's get for mileage on the freeway mainly? I drive 105 miles a day for work so this is an important one..
How reliable is a GTO with around 50k on the clock going to be? Is the upkeep on them $$$ wise ok?
How does a 05-06 GTO compare overall with a 4th gen F-body and where does it contrast?
Thanks guys

If you thought upkeep on your 98 camaro ss was expensive wait til you see the prices for a GTO. Look up anything for a GTO and its gonna be expensive. Aftermarket parts arent cheap either. My opinion is if up keep was expensive for you before i would go with350z. Parts are probably gonna be cheaper and there are thousands of them around where as with the GTO your basically in an exclusive club since their isnt many around. As for parts for a GTO look up a centercap from gmpartshouse and thats just a centercap.

I drive 99 miles a day in my 04 gto m6, 95% of it is freeway. I get 26 mpg Highway all day long, I will be doing exhaust udp and lean cruise soon and will be geting an easy 30.
If you get a bare bone stock one(very few left), it'll take about a grand(not all at once) to fix the gto's flaws.

Udp just spins the accessories slower, so it take less power to run everything. Timing isn't effected, but if you got a big stereo system you may want the go to a deep cycle battery.

Hmm see the camaro was more like major repairs plus it had 180k on it. But I mean is a gto that bad as in 2k a month on repairs? I mean i did that on my 98 ss for about 4 months. Before I got something else. SO where all does the GTO and camaro compare?

I'm pretty much on par with these guys. I get about 26 highway and like they said, in stop and go it sucks gas to the tune of about 18-19 mpg in the city WITH traffic.
Other than that the car is SUPER enjoyable to drive. It's an american BMW, as my buddies wife calls it.
And we're looking to sell it. We're asking 11.2 for it with 103K on the ticker. It's an A4 and in the GTO classified if you're interested.

If you get the 04 you can have lean cruise activated...I routinely get upper 20 MPG on the highway at 80 and I have a pretty big cam.
If you're thinking an Fbody was high on maintenance costs probably shouldnt be looking at a GTO OR a 350Z as parts for either are in the upper spectrum of parts for common cars. Motor stuff for the goat is cheap but anything GTO specific is kinda pricy.
Comparing a GTO to an Fbody is a horrible thing. When I had both the Fbody felt long, and it was horrible to see out of. The 01 SS I was driving was a stock six speed and while it was a fun car, getting in to the GTO was much more enjoyable. The GTO is an easier car to control at its limits and it has a much better interior as well as seating position. My GTO ran mid 13's bone stock which is on par with Fbodies in terms of speed and its just been a pleasure to drive.
I have 110K on mine now and most of the stuff I've fixed has been stuff I've broke. The only normal issue was the radiator split on me....but thats extremely common.
I wouldn't narrow the search down to 05-06 but look at all three years....you'll most likely find a better car doing it this way.
Oh.....350Z's are two seaters and slow.....straighline speed is rediculously different in the GTO. The corner carving I have to nod towards the Z as it is much more nimble feeling....but in the end it sucks in a straight, lol.

ive owned both, a 99 z28 m6 and i still own a 05 sap gto m6. to me the gto is a much smoother ride, very comfortable. the z28 was MUCH more fun to drive. very nimble . as for mpg , i get about 25 hwy, city sux, as for the 350z., i would bump it by 20 and get the 370z. it will straight line with the best of them (13.1 at 108, if i remember right). nah! buy the goat dude, join the club

If you get a GTO replace anything that breaks with aftermarket parts. For an example the split radiator when it happens to you just replace it with an all aluminum. That way its getting replace by parts that should of been in there when the car was made. As for spending 2k a month on repairs the GTO isnt that bad just the parts are expensive. As long as you take care of the GTO you should be ok.

Well I am not one to really beat on my cars I like taking care of investments, alot of guys ask me why I have sports cars as I regularly dont drive to aggressive but I love the looks and knowing the power is there on tap when you need it. I go out to a drag strip a few times I year but I wont risk my job with spirited driving on the road.I test drove a 350 today I was impressed by the handling but there is some kind of lure about that big v8......

The ONLY thing I REALLY liked about the 350Z was the steering feel. They're cool cars for the money and they do drive nice, but they're not that fast and they're kind of a pain to work on.
Which 350 were you looking at? The older one or the one with the dual throttle bodies? The dual throttle body version was quite a bit peppier and had a broader powerband.
The 370Z IMO looks much more agressive and has a lot more out of the box potential. I don't think thats in the pricerange of the vehicles you've mentioned though.
Now is the time to buy a goat....market prices are steadily on the rise. They bottomed out the last couple years but are steadily making a comeback.

LOL I have seen that its a pretty sick car. I actually have an L92 waiting to go into something the plan actually was to buy a older crew cab chevy and put it in that. This car will be my daily driver/work car so I dont want to do much tinkering on it maybe a few mods I/H/E and call that good. I like the 370z alot but not in the pricerange I am looking at but we will see who knows maybe I will find one I like.
