Today Over 95 degrees in the chicagoland area, after a 33mile travel i stop for a few minutes at the bank and i come back..turn the goat on and alarm chimes that engine is hot..(this happened once before and i panicked and turned her off) but today i just waited a sec and i guess once thermo. or fan kicked in the needle dropped down to its normal level.

As i mentioned this has happened once before and i panicked that time and turned her off immediately, this time i just waited a sec and the temp slowly came down.

Please folks what causing this? i'm thinking its either the fan or the thermostat, bu im no expert...whatever it is i'd like to fix it.

I was even thinking of wiring in a fan delay like i have in my GTI after every drive that fan remains on for like 30secs to 2minutes depending on temp,then shuts off on its own..Thats if the fan is the culprit.

Is the temp guage showing normal before you cut off?.....have you already checked to be sure it has plenty of coolant?

yes, shows normal...then i come back and it does that...probably after i'd say about 5 to 10 minutes.

and yes theres coolant in there...but i'm going to have to go check again..you are the second person to suggest i check that plus i did my pulleys recently and pulled off the rad hose to get to the pulleys, maybe i didnt top her off enough

yup...she had plenty in there(coolant)...and i topped it off even more now..just about full.

water pump or radiator, ive dealt with the same bs on my car..... and replaced both. problem solved

You could of had a air pocket maybe....when the ac is on are the fans kicking on?

i too think its an air pocket...directly related to me taking the upper rad hose and fan off to do the pulleys..my damn cave-man hands aren't petite enough to fit..then i forgot to tighten that hose when i finished the job..got on the highway and spewed coolant all over the place..that was fun!

how do i get rid of an air pocket?

Filling Instructions


-Slowly fill the cooling system through the upper radiator hose with a 50/50 coolant mixture until the coolant comes out the coolant air bleed hose.

-Fill the radiator with coolant through the surge tank opening to the full line.

-Install the radiator cap.

-Start the engine.

-Run the engine at 2,000 - 2,500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

-Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes .

-Shut the engine OFF.

-Allow the engine to cool.

-Top off the coolant as necessary.

-Inspect the concentration of the engine coolant.

-Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the engine compartment.

-Inspect the cooling system for leaks.

im just too leery about taking off the rad hose. thats what got me here in the first place and with the surge tank being full to the brim now..i'll definitely make a mess...anything else that does not involve that hose? like idle for 15mins, then open cap off surge tank. and let it burp itself..would that work?
