Default 06 GTO Tire Rub

What up guys! I do not have a GTO, but my friend has a 06 GTO with the 18" wheels. He is constantly complaining about tire rub in the rear. How are you guys fixing this issues? I thought spacers would be a quick fix, but its not my car. He added that springs and fender rolling would fix the issue? (Im not sure about this one) So any input would be appreciated!

Sagging springs in the rear will give the car more camber as it accelerates and thus you get odd tire wear and rubbing.

New aftermarket springs should fix that right up. No need for a spacer with stock wheels.

But I also kinda read were some people upgraded the springs and they still had the rubbing issue. So at that point would changing struts and bushings and getting an alignment help the issue as well. I dont own the car so forgive me of my ignorance on some things !!!!!

That's more of a problem in the front, where yes you should be changing some bushings and the struts also.

In the rear, there's no camber adjustment and really you shouldn't be rubbing anywhere with stock size wheels and tires. There is plenty of clearance all around, so if you're still rubbing there with the stock wheels and tires and new springs you have some major structural problems.

He has two set of tire. the 18" and the 17" or 16" (whichever it is). The smaller wheel is the winter tire and the 18s are the summer tire. The summer tire rub majority of the time where the smaller winter wheels rub here and there. Their is nothing done as far as mods to the car or suspension. So you think springs would fix that? He likes the King springs but he wants to continue to maintain stock ride height if he bought them........Any advice?

Where does it rub? If rear only then springs will most likely fix it. If it's front also, then he will need at least strut mounts along with springs. It's a good idea to also replace the struts/shocks also while doing springs.

Lovells will be his bet bet for stock height spring selection. Pedders is whack right now, and others like H&R, Eibach and Tein I believe only do lowering springs. Kings might also but not sure.

I would do some Lovells stock height all around with KYB struts/shocks, strut mounts and radius rod bushings. Those are the biggest things to replace and should more than help his rubbing given that he has a good alignment.

We did the drag bags in the back on mine years ago and I have a little larger tire on the 18's as well. We did a little "hammer" clearance work as well. Though it is a little rough with three pieces of sheet metal all coming together there. It only gives me a little kiss/rub with a third passenger.

What width are the tires? Stock 235s on factory 18s should not be rubbing anywhere in the rear. If he has shoehorned 275s on the 18s, then there might be some rubbing. I ran 265/35s on the stock 18s on the rear of my 06 GTO and never had any rub. I had drag bags "just in case" but never had to use them. My car was also a low-mileage car (24K when I sold it last summer) so the factory suspension hadn't started to sag yet.

^This. No way should he be rubbing with stock size 235s in the rear. Either the tires are too wide or the 18s are not stock and have an improper offset.

I run a Nitto 275 on my stock 17's and they rubbed. I added drag bags for dirt cheap and it fixed the issue.

My fronts rub at full lock but I've got 245 18s and its lowered a bunch, rears have pedders springs and drag bags. With 245s in the rear it has plenty of room without air in the bags even with a lower offset wheel. Front and rear have been rolled. I could easily run a 275 with a little air in the bags without rubbing.
