Default I want one but need some convinceing!!!

I have always wanted a new GTO ever since they came out but I was in college and that is definitly not the time to buy a new car. Well now I am graduated for a while with what I think is a decent job (mechanical engineer) and I have just paid off all my school loans.
So many people I talk to keep saying to buy a house and all that crap and don't get a new car. Honestly I don't think I would get as much excitment out of a house ever as you could with a nice car (I have driven pieces of sh*t all my life).
Anyways here is the big question, has anyone regreted buying there new goat over other sensible purchases (like saving for a house)????
BTW I pay $150 a month rent, helps a ton.
Just looking for some opinions
thanks

cool that's the same career path i'm hoping for. Also my planed car upon graduation.

I'd say an awesome buy for a budget would be an 04 GTO, since everyone wants the LS2's these things can be picked up for low low 20's, i've seen a few in the teens. There's one in richardson with 3800 miles on it going for 22!

Don't worry about the 50hp you're missing, that can be made up with boltons pretty easily.

Great choice on the ME degree, if you like taking things apart and problem solving, this is the greatest job in the world.
Good luck.

Congrats on graduating, I've still got 78 days till I’m done, (Aerospace Eng.) I bought my GTO at the end of last summer, it’s a silver '04 w/ the 6 speed, and I have to say that it was worth every penny -every one of the $23,000 worth of pennies. I think that the '04 GTO's are the best deal an auto enthusiast can find, where else can you get a practically new (mine had 4,573 mile) damn sexy car that goes like hell and actually has a interior that doesn’t make you cringe. I hope that you have taken one for a test drive, that’s what sold me. As far as any regrets, I have none. I think that this is a jewel in the auto landscape that a lot of people look past. I love the fact that I see more vipers then GTO's but at the same time it’s got a ls1 so you can find parts and support anywhere. This car, unlike some of its brethren, is just filled with class. You can give you boss/client a ride one day and take it to the track the next!

I guess I'm saying stop thinking about it and just GET IT!!! You’ll love it

Grats on graduation .. no regrets on GTO here .. but my 2cents are ...
House then Car ... you can walk if ya have to but ya need a roof over ur head. Nice cheap rent there ... but in 10 years a house will pay for a few GTOs.

GL 2 ya!

Are you in current need of reliable tranportation? Buying a house deosn't make sense if you don't have a reliable form of transportation to get to work to be able to pay your mortgage.

Reliable transportation is not a problem, I have a 93 Z28 thats surprisingly reliable (started it yesterday at -15 after sitting for a month in the snow) for winter driving I have a 92 Buick wagon (I once hauled 1200lbs of cement in the wagon!!) My other 2 vehicles are a 78 and 74 international scout II's soon to be combined to make one.
I just wanted to know if anyone is regretting there goat as opposed to more 'responsible' purchases.
Thanks

Responsible? Buying a GTO is not considered responsible! Like they say on Dream Car Garage, don't you need this car? Maybe or maybe not. Do you want this car? Hell ya! I've had mine for 1 1/2 yrs now and this car is a blast to drive. About the only thing most have complained bout this car is the strut rubbing on the front wheels, my car has a slight rubbing but no problem with wheel/tire. This car is more comfortable than my 94 Impala SS I used to owned! I've driven my car to GA and NC, never getting tired of the long trip. You want a fun car to own, GTO is for you.

Get the 2005 or 2006. Not only did they fix the strut rub problem, but they also changed out the shitty brakes and added more power.

Plus, don't forget the cosmetic upgrades.

I'm telling you. Test drive the GTO, and you'll be buying one.

Default Well you have convinced me!

At the end of this month I will have my school loan completely paid off and I will be 100% debt free. So once the roads are clean up here (MN) I will take one out for a test drive. By that time I might even have enough for a noce down payment.

By the way what kind of down payment did you all put down, and what are your payments are you making, if you don't mind me asking.

Most of all its not the car payments that scare me its that damn insurance. I am 24 with a spotless record but I can't help but think I will get raped with a brand new car. Nothing can be as good as the $43 a month I spend right now for the Z.
Thank

I put 1k down on mine but I got an 04 for 20K brand new... The amount I would put down would probably depend on the interest rate I could get...I got a 0.9% so it really wasn't a big issue to have a big downpayment unless you are looking for a specific monthly payment.

Insurance should not be too much but look around some people on here pay some super low rates. I am 25 and pay ~800 a year for full coverage.

I just graduated in May 05 with a degree in Civil Engineering and found a great job that I love; 6 months later I bought a 02 CETA and love it my absolute dream car. I remember my freshman year buying a diecast CETA and putting it on my desk hoping to have a real one in 4 years. I can't tell you how gratifying it is to just drive it and think about all the work it took to get here. I also have a daily driver (and a modded truck but we won't go there), the house/land just isn't appealing to me right now. I'm sure in two/three years when the cars are paid off it will probably be more in the picture.

An LS2 6-speed GTO runs mid-high 12's stock, the auto version will run high 12's to low 13's.

It looks like I may very well be joining the ranks of the GTO owners here very shortly as well, I'm working on securing a deal on a '04 GTO M6, Cosmos Purple Metallic.

4300 miles... $22K
