Default OIL CAPACITY FOR 2006 GTO AFTER OIL & FILTER CHANGE

What is the correct quantity of oil to fill the crankcase for the 2006 pontiac gto after an oil and filter change. The owner's manual states 6.5 qts of oil (mobile1). The helm's service manual states 5.5 qts of oil (mobile1). Which is corrrect?

I filled mine with 6.5 quarts and I ended up being about a half quart over full on the dipstick.....I think due to some old oil that didn't drain out of the pan. So I'd say throw in a straight 6 quarts and see where you are on the stick. Always easier to add more than to drain.

Thanks for the info. I think that I'll drain the oil, change the filter, add 5 qts of oil (after first filling the oil filter with oil), run it, check the oil after about 5 minutes then add oil to bring it up to the full mark.

I put in 6qts with the filter. Then check it the next day to see if I need to add any.

I always do the recommended 6.5. My LS2 seems to burn a little off every oil change, which I have heard is a common occurance with these engines. I have only done 3 changes though as the car has 7,000 miles on it. Maybe it will get better or maybe it will get worse who knows.

I bought 7 quarts of oil when I did my oil/filter swap. I only needed to use 6 quarts. I checked my dipstick after the 6th quart and the oil level was maxed out on the "safe" zone on the dipstick.

Checked the oil a month later... all is good.

Helm just released the 2006 GTO Service Manual early this month. I got mine this past Monday.

On "Page 0-24 Maintenance and Lubrication" it clearly states:

Engine Oil with Filter 6.2L or 6.55qt
Engine Oil without Filter 5.7L or 6.02qt

Not sure what year manual you are using but that is what mine says.

I am using the same manual that you have. My point is that I don't believe that 6.5 qts is the correct quantity of oil after an oil and filter change. I believe that the engine will only hold 6 quarts of oil with an oil and filter change and will be over filled if you use 6.5 qts. I also owned a new 2004 GTO which I traded, with 25,000 miles on it, for the "06". The helm service manual for that car, which I still have, states the same thing that is stated in the "06" manual for oil capacity (except for the engine size). I kept the "04" for 2 years. I did all of the service for that car myself. It never took more than 6 quarts of oil after an oil and filter change (I changed the oil every 3000 miles without fail!). I believe that both of those manuals are incorrect about the engine oil capacity. I consulted the service department of the dealer where I purchased the car and asked them how much oil they put back in after an oil and filter change on the GTO. They said that they are never able to get more than 6 qts of oil in these cars after an oil and filter change.

I just had my first oil change at the dealer. I gave them only 6 quarts of Mobil 1 (I brought my own oil) and checked the oil level on level surface right after I got it back. Needed exactly another 0.5 quart to make it full on the dipstick. I'd say GM is right on the money.

I'd say your not getting all the oil drained when you only have to put in 6 quarts.

Since I have been doing automotive repair work for the last 37 years, I think that I get all of the oil out when I do a simple oil and filter change. I always allow ample time for all of the oil to drain and I always change the oil with the car level. Did you check the oil in your car after sufficient time had passed so that all of the oil had drained back into the oil pan? Or did you check it just after you had shut it off?

Well,,...a 5.7 LS1 uses 5.5 and you probably have an LS2 right? LS2s are 6.0 liters so i'd say 5.7/5.8 Quarts.

That has nothing to do with it.

The GTO takes 6.5 if you get all the oil out. Most don't. You have to jack up the rear to get all of it out. Even if the car is flat, some will still stay in the pan.

GTOs have a different oil pan.

Change oil every 3000 miles if town driving or 4000 miles if interstate driving. Always change the oil filter......
any questions?

I just put 5 quarts in mine and it is half way on the safety stick. That is on level ground after sitting for all day...so it should probably have a half quart of synthetic Mobile one, recommended by GM.
