Default GTO Collector...

I have no idea if this is a right place to put this but I wanted to get the info from the real GTO owners.. My friend bought a 04 GTO and wont do anything to it because the dealership told him that it was a collector car.. Would the real GTO owners consider the 04 GTO's as a collectors car? I know they only made them for 3 years but that dont make it a collector right now.. I know for a fact that he wont own the car when it would actually in my mind be considered a collector..

I wanna hear the input of the GTO owners on this issue because it is driving me insane...

Lol your freind can mod it all he wants, just keep in the garage and the miles low

Notice most cars are modded nowa days, so if its done right and not cheap it could help sell the car...

I think you're friend is going to have to own his car for a LONG time before it will ever be collectable. It probably won't be worth what he paid for it for at least 20 years if ever so he might as well enjoy it.

^ I agree. Enjoy the car now and don't worry about counting the miles. I mean the GTO already is a collectable just not worth that "collectable" price yet.

I chose an '04 intentionally for the "last of the 350's and the first re-intro GTO." Their limited production numbers lead me to think that we can look to the Impala SS for rough depreciation figures. The '05-06's will likely be more valuable until all "new" GTO's become oober-rare, and even then it would still be described as: "the less-powerful LS1 GTO." I would think that a bigger reason for not modding (in interest to the dealership) may have more to do with warranty issues and trade-in value - not collector depreciation.

I think it's naive to even think that the modern GTO will ever be a collector car--just like it's naive to think that a 4th gen f-body will be a collector car. A good example of a collector car is an Enzo Ferrari. It was an anniversary car, made only in one year, had a VERY limited production run, and current values are double what the car retailed for brand-new. Now, that's a collector car. As for a GTO being a collector car or any other regular production car being a collector car? Don't make me laugh. I think one has to be a very vain person to over-appreciate his or her car like that.

A GTO, like almost every other car, is a tool and was built to be driven to the ground.

Not a collector...better to invest money somewhere and enjoy the car.

No, I'm not gonna say "apples & oranges." Instead, I'm gonna say, "You're right!" The late model GTO is nothing more than a Grand Prix with a fat @$$, and a retired Corvette engine in it, right? That would be like someone collecting a 40+ year-old Tempest; I mean, who would want a brute gas-guzzler V8 like that anyway? It's not like it's an original concept or anything. Point well made: My GTO will never be a friggin' Ferrari.
...oh well, at least the GTO's cheaper to maintain, so I'll just have to drive this worthless heap until I save up enough for my Enzo.

They're not collector cars, enjoy it.

The ls1 cars are not the "last of the 350's anyways" the chevy 350 died many years ago in production cars.

I have always considered the GTO a collector car. Hell, look at my screen name. That is my cars birth month. Two months into production. One of the first to come over on the boat.

Oh, and I have kept my mods light, and easy to reverse in the case I return to stock in many years. And I plan on buying a low production/optioned GTO with low miles and all stock one day.

Yeah, I know it's technically a 346, but the 5.7 liter is still sometimes refered to by some as a "350" (kinda like calling the 5.3L [325ci] a 327). The old school guys seem to do it more often, but everybody knows what they're talking about.
I think the last of the Gen-I 350's were used in the GM trucks up until '00. With the Vortec heads and all the fuel injection stuff that goes with it it didn't look much like the original there towards the end.

I am going to disagree with most people. If you would have asked an owner of a 1967 GTO, in say 1971, if his car would be a collector car he would have said no. In 30-40 years from now I believe these will be collector cars, especially with the new laws coming and the probable death of the modern muscle car era. Is it a collector car today? Hell no. But I believe it will be.

In 40 years I'll be 80. I don't think it will matter much by then if the car is collectable or not.

in 30 to 40 years cars wont even run on gas they will run on hopes and dreams and try putting that into your 04 GTO, drive the car for what it is now dont waste it by trying to save it for tomarrow

Your right in trucks, but not "cars"

i think 2door v8 performance coupes are going to become more valuable in general because of the new cafe mileage standards. there are going to be fewer manufactured

The GTO is just a rebaged Holden Monaro, which is a reheated design from Opel, that got it's roots from the old Caddy Cateras... Very unlikely these will be collectors cars just because they have GTO written in plastic on them.

Tell your friend to enjoy driving his powerful RWD V8 for what it is.... The opportunity may not be around much longer.
